Health & Social Care
Introduction
The UK Governments
agenda is about developing services based on
better quality information. For the individual
clinician working in health and social care it
is about accessing accredited information quickly to support
direct patient / client care and it means accessing and
contributing to evidence-based practice which validates
interventions. Patients/clients want to feel that they are
getting the best possible treatment and that they can have
confidence in the services provided by the Government.
Members of the general
public now have more gate-ways to health information than ever
before as access to the Internet, digital TV, and CD's etc.
provide a wealth of information about common, and not so
common, conditions. It is important that clinicians are as
active in their search for up-to-date and relevant information
as their patients /clients are!

If you are a clinician working in health and social care
- Do you know what the information agendas and
developments are nationally in England, Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland?
- Do you know what is happening at regional and local
level to support you in accessing the skills, knowledge and
experience you need to take advantage of the information
agenda?
- Do you have workplace access to the internet or
electronic accredited information?
- Do you speak the same language as your colleagues?
- Are you still collecting data that is never returned
to you in a useable form for the benefit of client care?
- Do you know about the Learning and Teaching Support
Networks?
There are more questions than there are
answers! If you have positive answers to all these questions
we believe you are the 'exception rather than the rule'.
If you
would like to know the answers to some of these questions, and
more,
contact Learn Net direct to see how we can help you and
your service to develop the skills and knowledge to stay on
the 'right side' of the growing
information divide.

Be prepared for learning within a Virtual
Classroom, from your home or place of work. It is intended
that this type of learning will become widely available
within the NHS. Make sure that you know what to expect, the
questions to ask and how to take advantage of this for the
benefit of your continuing professional development (CPD).

Do you need some help in reviewing what
your service needs to do in order to engage in local,
regional, and national information developments. This may
include reviewing systems, skills and knowledge within your
service, analysis of need, advising on where to access
information and training, and /or helping you to access
funding to develop innovative ideas which meet the need of

The Garner Project.
Between 1998 and 2003 Learn Net
worked with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and
College of Occupational Therapists (COT) to scope the
information management needs of physiotherapists and
occupational therapists. Following this, recommendations
were made to both professional bodies and action plans
developed. Other Allied Health Professional groups felt that
this study and subsequent recommendations were equally
relevant to their own profession.

The NHS Information Authority.
In 2003 / 2004 Learn Net
was employed to scope how the Allied Health Profession felt
they could work with, and impact on, SNOMED Clinical Terms and
to develop / recommend a model for joint professional working.
This model was tested on the Allied Health Profession
representatives and, subsequently, on the Nursing and Medical
professions.
