(University) Certificate in Work Based ICT (online).

Bournville College, working with the University of Birmingham, is now recruiting to an online course aimed at improving your ICT skills. This course will show you how you learn at work, which will help your employability.  It is aimed at people in work but is also suitable for those planning to return to work.

Duration: One year from April 2005 – March 2006

Academic Level: University level 1: equivalent to Year one of HE study, HNC or NVQ level 4

Teaching and Learning Methods

Each module will be delivered through your PC at home and/or at work, so you can work on the various tasks in your own time. (Some community based venues will offer the programme if you don’t have access to the internet and PC at home).  You will be assigned a tutor, who will comment on your work, and who will provide learning support where necessary. You will also get lots of support and feedback from other students on the course.  There will be some drop-in tutorial and advice sessions arranged throughout the course so that you can meet your fellow students and talk with the tutors.

Course content

There are three 20 credit modules that are designed to help you to improve your skills and employability.

Module 1: ICT-based communication and collaboration

Exploring the different ways to use ICT to communicate and collaborate with others for work, study and leisure. It includes discussions on emails and the internet, and will consider legal and ethical issues.

“What I liked best about module 1 was researching and looking at different aspects of communication.  I enjoyed working online with others and being able to discuss with a group and get different perspectives.”

Module 2: Effective application software use

This module looks at the different types of software available.  It considers the skills required, and how appropriate each application is for its purpose.

“I enjoyed the entire module as it was something to get your ‘teeth’ into.  A very practical and useful module.”

Module 3: Work based learning

How people learn at work, and how learning can be transferred into the workplace. How to apply theoretical learning to your practical work and other learning situations.

“I enjoyed learning about personalities and interaction.  I also enjoyed doing the assignment with my eBuddies -  we got along so well.”

Progression

If you are successful on this programme you will be awarded a Certificate for 60 credits. These credits are transferable and can go towards a Certificate in Higher Education, a Diploma in Higher Education, a Foundation Degree or a full undergraduate Degree at Birmingham or at another University.  The qualification may also provide you with opportunities for promotion in your current job.

Cost
